Nineteen individuals partici-pated in a four-week Local Food Diet Challenge, which included eating only foods produced from within 100 miles of the participants' homes. This paper describes a study that explored the perceived benefits and challenges of following a diet consisting exclusively of local food in south-western Virginia, as well as the strategies for coping with its limitations. I also liked that you could get some Whole Foods brands, but I found that selection to be quite limited.Supported in part by a variety of popular books, websites, and other media, the interest in local food is building dramatically, and a growing number of people are increasing their purchases of local food. The produce was “meh.” That said, the prices were cheaper and they have a wider selection of “grocery” items/brands than FD (ie, the terrible for you, but guilty pleasure frozen pizzas I like). The delivery just gets dropped off at the front door (FD guys drop my bags into my kitchen). I recently tried Amazon Fresh because of a promotional offer and was not impressed. They have also been waving the delivery fee for FoodKick for us, and that service is great, but I’ve only used it a handful of times. I pay the annual deliverypass fee, so can order as much or as little as I want without having to pay a service fee each time. We also occasionally order wine through them, as they partner with Union Square Wines. There is also a surprisingly good cheese selection. Fish, meat and produce selection are great, as are the frozen baked goods (French bread, croissants, brioche, challah). I’ve had maybe ten issues over all this time and FD has always been either replaced my problem items or refunded me without question. Their customer service is also very responsive. The new bag system is great and cuts down on a lot of waste. I’ve been using FreshDirect weekly since 2007 and love it.
